North Carolina Central University, or NCCU for short, is a comprehensive university located in Durham, which is the county seat of Durham County, also extending in Wake county, situated in the US state of North Carolina, with a population estimated at a number of 223 284 inhabitants, fact which makes it the 5th largest city, by population, in the state.
NCCU was founded by James E. Shepard as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, and it was chartered in 1909, as a private institution, being opened to students on July 5, 1910, adopting its current name in 1969, when The General Assembly established the institution as one of the State’s regional universities. NCCU offers its students, today, 36 master’s degrees and 1 professional degree, in various fields, including in biology, chemistry, criminal justice, education, earth sciences, human sciences, public administration and sociology.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the NCCU Eagles, who compete in 14 men’s and women’s sports, in NCAA’s Division I Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, including in football, softball, basketball, baseball, volleyball and tennis. NCUU’s athletic teams have experienced victory many times, in many of their sports, over the years, the university being nationally ranked primarily in football and basketball, including in many other sports in which the Eagles compete.
Among the most resonant names on the list of notable NCCU alumni there are: Sunshine Anderson - R&B Singer, Larry Black - Olympic track & field gold and silver medalist, Wanda G.
